[without the biggest pain, second biggest pain, third biggest pain]
You've always known that as a dance educator (or parent who invests in your child's training), that dance lessons teach more than steps; dance training teaches character, expression, resilience, life skills, community-building and more.
And at this critical moment in the world, you sense that the time has come to deepen your commitment to even more holistic education for your dancers, especially in terms of race and dance history.
You have always sensed the need, but now feel the great opportunity that now exists to create a more inclusive and empowering dance environment.
And beyond the efforts you've already been making, you know you can and truly want to do even more to align yourself and your lessons to this goal.
Even if you have already had success with introducing dance history to your students, learning and then teaching deeper racial context and history can
You've probably experienced some issues first-hand, and you've also been scrolling and reading posts about race, racism and dance history in all the dance groups for years; maybe you even chime in and "comment" from time to time.
But you feel like the stakes are higher now, and a new window of opportunity is in front of us to step up to the plate and do more than post, comment, "like" and scroll. It's time to teach and reach our students in a way that will actually make the dance world BETTER for the long-haul.
But what's the best way?
Maybe you have young students, or you don't have a lot of time. Or worse yet - what if you say something causes problems??
The last thing you want to do is cause more confusion or hurt for anyone, or get into some crazy/exhausting political arguments, so maybe it's easier or safer to just keep quiet and keep scrolling. "This is too hard and too exhausting, so maybe it's just easier to stick to the steps and leave the rest alone. What's really gonna change anyway?"
But the clock keeps ticking and the tensions you see and feel are only growing. And whether you're just feeling tired because your efforts up to this point have been futile, or because you're scared to take a risk and step forward, you start to feel like you're standing in the wings of a stage you should be on.
You want to get in there and roll up your sleeves. And maybe the reason it can feel so frustrating or intimidating is because up to this point, there have been no effective tools or resources to use that are specially geared toward meaningful, impactful teaching!
Maybe you know soooo much that you don't know what to focus on, or how to break it down for the age of your students and the time frames you're working in.
Or maybe you don't know nearly enough to speak confidently to these issues and answer the tough questions you may be asked to answer.
No matter what's been holding you back up to this point, the need for a holistic roadmap is clear.
With the right guiding principles, approach and plans, you can get empowered with the resources and tools you need to push beyond any doubts that have held you back up to this point.
If you have hit walls in the past, the right plans and affirming support could get you re-energized and renewed in your desire to more deeply pursue this kind of education for your students.
While others are going it alone and hitting painful, avoidable "landmines" that make it so hard to keep moving forward, you can see that the right content, context, communication tools, and community support can truly change the game for you and help you make powerful, long-lasting improvements in your dance program and in the dance world as a whole.
With a deep and long-standing issue like race in dance, expecting that one "home run" conversation will change the world just isn't realistic, so let's take that pressure off.
In this case, a giant splash doesn't necessarily create the best impact.
You need to approach this just like you do any other dance lesson: you have a vision of where you are taking your students, then you teach and build upon your lessons over time, because consistent teaching makes for better retention and long-lasting results.
This is about the marathon, not the sprint, where inches of improvement create miles of progress.
So let's create plans with that vision in mind...If you don't have a vision for this yet, then let's talk about that...
You may have real doubts, but you also don't want to "stay on the sidelines" because that essentially guarantees that the status quo will continue. And if that's what you wanted, then you wouldn't even bother reading this page.
But since you're here, let me remind you how much your students respect you, and look up to you. You are a voice in their ear that is so meaningful, they trust in your leadership...and they're watching you now.
Mother Teresa once said, "I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples."
So yes, it's exhausting and it may not feel like your actions matter that much. But this is a friendly reminder of what you already know: every single voice that is raised now combines with every other single voice. And together, those voices and actions, in dance program after dance program, create a forward, snowballing momentum that can't be stopped.
So whether you need to be re-energized to continue your efforts or you need a place to start, the dance world is in need of YOUR voice.
Dance teachers come from all sorts of backgrounds, and have all sorts of education and experience that grounds their teaching approach.
And because we all take so many different routes to becoming dance teachers - whether you started teaching at age 19 or got a Master's Degree in Dance Education - we must all rely on various types of Professional Development in order to continually ensure that we are bringing the very best to our students, year after year.
Without professional development, our teaching approaches can wind up being out-of-step, out-of-touch and beneath current standards in the world today.
And when it comes to race in dance education, most people have been either un-informed or grossly mis-informed.
The consequence? Mis-education around race in dance:
1) has caused us to make questionable decisions in terms of what we choose to teach, and how we choose to teach it; and
2) has given all our students mis-information (or lack of information) that is dis-enfranchising and dis-empowering
Historical context has always been a guiding principle in our personal lives and in society; the past gives us lessons that influence the way we operate in the present.
With this is in mind, it's easy to see why leaving history out of professional development is costly.
Every student, regardless of their background, will benefit from learning more history and more context.
Think of it this way:
- If I cut a rose from a bush and hand it to you, you can hold it in your hands and enjoy it for a day or two.
- If you take that rose and put it in a vase of water, you'll be able to appreciate it for a bit longer.
- If the rose stays connected to the bush, then not only do I get to enjoy that particular rose, but I get to enjoy more roses that develop over time.
Why? Because the rose stayed connected to its roots.
So if we cut the dance forms off from their roots - even if it put them in a nice "vase" - the connection and ongoing appreciation of dance is severely limited.
EVERYONE WINS when we keep the connection of dance to its history.
We all know what it's like to be hurt by someone who "meant well." The face that they didn't mean to hurt us might take some of the sting out of the blow, but the hurt is still there.
We need to look at both our intentions AND our impact, and be sure that bridge between where we are coming from, and who are reaching, is effective.
That "bridge" has everything to do with having the right combination of a solid knowledge base, qualities and communication/leadership skills.
Without these key elements, our good intentions can fall flat.
I barely paid attention in history class. I did what I needed to, in order to get my "A."
But as I got older and started to learn from powerful mentors, I realized that history is FILLED with richness and incredibly deep lessons!
No one - not me, not you, not your students - want to sit around and learn a bunch of facts.
Teaching racial history & dance history, without examining the social science components, the connections to academic curricula, and of course the ties to the way that we approach our dancing will fall completely FLAT.
Your knowledge base cannot simply be a collection of historical facts. If that's all you have, then you'll have a tough time answering your students' and families' tough questions.
Your dance students will benefit so much more from history being taught by you with passion, insight and connection to what they're already learning.
Dancers don't shy away from a challenge; Dancers WANT the next challenge.
Dancers are resilient.
Dancers are always up for "one more time".
Dancers know how to use critical feedback not as an excuse to QUIT, but as a tool to do better next time.
Dancers don't quit because things get tough.
Dancers battle through injuries only to become stronger and create extraordinary beauty.
Dancers eliminate "can't" from their vocabulary and press on.
Dancers are READY for this moment, period. So let's go.
My hope lies with artists. Artists move from their hearts and spirits, not their heads. Artists know how to connect on a deeper level. So I firmly believe that us dancers are in a unique position to change the world.
It's always been true - my eyes are just open to that fact in a new way.
So if you're feeling that too, then I want to share with you some approaches that I've come up with to help fill in the HUGE gaps that are out there - lack of knowledge, lack of context, lack of tools, lack of support - so that the dance educators and parents who are ready to meet this moment, make a new mark, step up in a new way, can create a more enriching, inclusive, empowering environment for every dance student.

The body copy should immediately seek to diffuse friction by explaining WHY you’re the right person to teach it (credibility builders, results, cases, etc.).
It should also highlight your USP -- and emphasize why that USP is what they need to achieve the outcome they want even if they’ve been disillusioned before.
