About the Presenter

Hi, I'm Karida. I use my wide-ranging experiences as a performer and teacher to help dance educators lead their classes with renewed vision, more confidence, and refined strategies and skills that meet the demands of 21st century dance education.

 

My performing credits include:

Radio City Rockettes,

Cirque du Soleil, and

Dorrance Dance.

My experiences as an educator include: 

* Pace University Commercial Dance Program (Professor for Tap Dance),

* Broadway Dance Center in NYC (Tap Dance Faculty),

* Tap festivals across North America

* Various dance conventions

* 17+ years of recreational & competitive dance studio teaching

* Guest performer & lecturer in K-8 schools, providing a historical perspective and social context for Tap dance and Body percussion (since 2016). 

In 2018 I founded the Tap Teachers' Lounge - an online training program for Tap dance teachers in the dance studio setting. 

In 2020, I founded Roots, Rhythm, Race & Dance - a 6-week professional development program  that helps dance educators in all styles and settings to confidently introduce age appropriate lessons around race & history to their students.

This presentation will give more insights to those who:

1) Have Black students, collaborators (or People of Color in general), and need to get a better context of what they may be experiencing, and discover ways to support them.

2) Are generally unfamiliar with matters of racism, and have a sincere desire to learn more

3) Recognize that they may be mis-informed on some race matters, and are sincerely interested in gaining a clearer perspective 

4) Are informed about the basic aspects racism, but are looking to gain deeper context and insights

1) People who are not willing to expand or change their perspective

2) People who want to engage in partisan political arguments that distract from the humanitarian Issues that transcend party lines

3) Anyone who is unwilling to engage in discussion that respects everyone's human dignity. We can disagree without resorting to disrespect.
